Naruto Chapter 420 - "Battlefield Konoha" Summary
posted by Jehuty on 10 Oct 2008 08:28

Cover Page - All nine Jinchuuriki in color.

Naruto and Fukasaku are training several meters above Mt. Myouboku, apparently having used Sage Mode to amplify his jumping ability manifold. Naruto uses a kagebunshin to skillfully attack Fukasaku when suddenly-

We cut to Konoha. Iruka runs through a ruined street and comes upon a wounded shinobi. Iruka attempts to help him, but God Realm appears behind Iruka. He demands the location of the Nine-Tails Jinchuuriki, but Iruka refuses to tell him. God Realm moves to strike him with his black blade, but the blade is caught by Kakashi, who has suddenly appeared, Sharingan exposed, to fight God Realm. Kakashi asks Iruka to leave the fight to him and Iruka complies, carrying the wounded Shinobi with him.

God Realm performs a spinning back-kick, which Kakashi dodges, immediately countering with Earth Style: Flowing Wall Technique. A large brick wall appears bearing four bulldog faces. Pain manages to stab Kakashi in the shoulder with his black blade. Kakashi takes the chance to use Raikiri, but feels the pressure of the Rin'negan, much like Jiraiya did when he was impaled. This unnerves Kakashi, which allows Pain to dodge his lightning blade.

Pain asks Kakashi the whereabouts of Naruto. Kakashi refuses as well, stepping back, and attempts to launch another Raikiri. Suddenly, a tremendous force erupts from God Realm, blasting back Kakashi and destroying his wall.

Meanwhile, at Mt. Myouboku, Ma Toad tells Fukasaku and Naruto she's going out for groceries. Naruto grimaces at the thought of more toad food. Fukasaku then proceeds to explain that while Sage Mode and his combat training has been developed well, there are some risks.

Sage Mode may only be used for five minutes at maximum. The body ceases to collect natural energy when in motion, thus combat is not conducive to creating sage chakra.

Sage Mode takes a while to prepare, so it can only be used with companions around to guard and/or when out of combat.

Naruto angrily posits that due to those risks Sage Mode is virtually unusable, and thus his training has been a waste of time. Fukasaku dismisses that notion, stating that if he merge's with Naruto's body, the risks will disappear. Naruto, mortified, imagines some sort of freakish Naruto-Fuksaku mutant hybrid. Fukasaku reassures Naruto that it's merely the connecting of Naruto's shoulder to Fukasaku's spine, making it look like Fukasaku would be sitting on Naruto's shoulder.

Fukasaku states that this fusion is to allow the action of combat and the stillness of Sage Mode: one side moves while the other gathers energy. Fukasaku further explains that this is why Jiraiya needed both Fukasaku and his wife on his shoulders for Sage Mode. With a high-five between master and pupil, Fukasaku tells Naruto not to worry.

Meanwhile, at the autopsy of the former Animal Realm body in Konoha, Shizune discovers the secret of the black metal which Pain uses: the metal acts as a chakra receiver and the metal in the former Animal Realm body is still receiving. Shizune rushes to go inform Tsunade.

A rumbling alerts Shikamaru, Shiho, and Sakura of Pain's attack. They rush off to assist in the battle. Demon Realm's head opens, revealing a powerful canon which demolishes a building in one blast, catching the attention of Hinata, Kiba, Shino, Ino, and Chouji. Ino runs off to alert her father, who has finally managed to crack the protection in the mind of Jiraiya's Rain Village prisoner.

Two shinobi tell Tsunade of Pain's attack. She recalls Fukasaku saying that Naruto is the Child of Prophecy, Jiraiya, Nawaki and Dan, and the fact that she gave Naruto her necklace. With these thoughts in mind, she gives two orders: To turn on the special emergency alarm and to call back Naruto!

Naruto Chapter 419 - "Attack!!" Summary
posted by Jehuty on 03 Oct 2008 08:42

We begin with the Yahiko Pain body explaining how to the other bodies and Konan they are going to attack Konoha. He divides his bodies into two groups, diversion and reconnaissance where we discover the "designation" of each body.

Diversionary:
Weird Neck Spiked Head Pain: Demon Realm.
Effeminate "Summoning" Pain: Animal Realm.
Fat "Absorbing" Pain: Hungry Ghost Realm.

Reconnaissance:
Yahiko Pain: God Realm.
Skinny Long-haired Pain: Human Realm.
Spiked Hair Large Chin Pain: Hell Realm.
Konan.

God Realm (Yahiko) inspects Konoha from afar with his Rinnegan and sees a spherical barrier. Konan states that any intruders will be sensed immediately. God Realm says that the plan is to launch Animal Realm (Summoner) above the village and wait for the summons. Konan comments that Kisame and Itachi got in three years ago with no problem, to which God Realm replies that Itachi was part of the assassination squad, and therefore knew how to get in and out of the barrier without setting it off.

Demon Realm (spiked head) throws Animal Realm a great distance, through the barrier, where he is noticed by the barrier monitors. Animal Realm summons the rest of the bodies, who scatter. Demon Realm detaches his arm and missiles erupt from the stump, causing explosions all over Konoha. Animal Realm summons a tremendous centipede-looking creature, which wreaks havoc all over the village.

Just as planned, the barrier watchers are confused by the number and range of attacks. A Hyuuga, possibly Hiashi, offers to look with his Byakugan, but his teammate says to contact Tsunade and get backup immediately.

Meanwhile, Human Realm (Skinny) apparently probes the mind of a villager for information on the Nine-Tails. Discovering nothing, he lifts his hand, pulling what appears to be the villager's soul out.

At the Cloud Village, the Raikage dispatches Samui, Omoi, and Karui with a message to Tsunade. The team is worried about Killerbee, apparently their sensei, but the Raikage tearfully says they'll rescue him no matter what. His tears are soon joined by Omoi and Karui.

The scene cuts to Madara, Zetsu, and Kisame extracting the Eight-Tails from Killerbee's body. Zetsu's white side complains about the extended length of the sealing process with fewer people. Just then, however, Killerbee's body poofs away, revealing one of the Eight-Tails' tentacle-tails. Kisame comments that Sasuke screwed up.

Outside the hideout, Killerbee himself emerges from another tentacle-tail and enters a conversation with the Eight-Tails as he makes his escape. The Eight-Tails complains that he lost several limbs so that the escape could work. After the Eight-Tails insults Killerbee's rapping ability, Killerbee gleefully exclaims that next time he'll sing enka (Japanese folk/country music).

The Eight-Tails is not amused and asks what Killerbee will do now. Killerbee responds that he's finally free of both Akatsuki and the village, so he'll go contact Sabu, leader of the Enka-ninja. The Eight-Tails asks why Killerbee summoned him when he had the upper hand against team Taka. Killerbee remarks that Sasuke was one of the strongest he'd ever fought, and he just got carried away.

Ominously, the Eight-Tails muses, "... I think maybe a new era is coming..." to which Killerbee replies with a smile, "Huh? Because of my Enka?"

Naruto Chapter 418 - "Naruto, The Sage!" Summary
posted by Jehuty on 30 Sep 2008 03:17

The chapter opens with Naruto training at Mt. Myoboku, perfectly balancing his seat upon a spike, finally completing the requirement of the training to cease all movement. Fukasaku smiles at Naruto's progress. Natural energy floods towards Naruto and his eyes morph, different from before, into toad eyes not from an overload of natural energy, but because at long last Naruto has achieved Sage Mode. Fukasaku remarks that Naruto has progressed tremendously, creating more Sage Chakra than he had been able to with the toad oil.

Suddenly, a bird lands on Naruto's shoulder, comedically throwing him off balance and causing him to fall. However, when he lands, Naruto notices that oddly, the fall didn't hurt him that much. Fukasaku explains that now that Naruto is in Sage Mode, his body has been improved tremendously. He then explains that there's one last step to training in Sage Techniques: Frog-style martial arts.

Meanwhile, at Akatsuki and Hawk's hideout, four Hidden Cloud Village shinobi attempt an infiltration, only to discover their comrade dead, likely at Sasuke's hand.

Night falls. While Fuksasku sleeps, Naruto trains in secret, commenting that he's achieved something, but needs to continue training in Sage Mode and must be in secret.

Back at Konoha, in the Cryptographers' Office, Shikamaru, Sakura, and Shiho attempt to deduce the meaning behind Jiraiya's code, "The real one isn't there." Shikamaru suggests that Pain's six bodies were just using genjutsu while Konan was the one attacking. Sakura doubts this, noting that the bodies stabbed and killed Jiraiya physically, two feats, one of which is impossible through genjutsu alone, the other almost so by nearly all genjutsu. Sakura further posits that such a genjutsu is too complex and farfetched. Shikamaru, remembering his encounters with Hidan and Kakuzu, replies that there's nothing too farfetched with Akatsuki.

Meanwhile, with the Interrogation Squad, Yamanaka Inoichi arrives to assist Ibiki in the information extraction from Jiraiya's Hidden Rain prisoner. Inoichi discovers powerful genjutsu shields that protect him from their truth serums, which Ibiki theorizes Pain set.

During this, Shizune and her medical team continue their autopsy of the Summoning Pain body. They appear to have extracted the black metal from its body and have ground up part of the metal into powder for inspection.

Cut to a scene of a massacre. A squad of shinobi litters the ground, dead, slain by the Six Paths of Pain and Konan. As they arrive at the walls of Konoha, Pain remarks, "This is nothing compared to the pain the world will suffer."

Time for another Weekly Debate, come join our forums and get your point across.

Opening Post:

Since the dub is nearing completion of Part I, I felt it was time to reask this. How do you guys feel the Dub is in, well, dubbing quality? How are the voice actors? Do they match the character's original or perceived voices? How are their pronunciation skills with the foreign terms? Do they handle emotion well?

Praise or condemn.

Naruto Chapter 416 Summary
posted by Punxx on 14 Sep 2008 01:05

***SPOILER WARNING***

The chapter opens in media res with a blonde familiar-looking shinobi battling against an enemy of an unknown village. The blonde shinobi is apparently cornered by this enemy and uses various ninja tools to attempt to turn the tide. The enemy tells the blonde shinobi to give up. The blonde shinobi refuses, revealing his kagebunshin-based tactics to gain the upper hand and handily defeat the enemy.

As the enemy crumples to the ground, he sneers, telling the blonde shinobi that shinobi are all cursed with a lack of peace. The blonde rejects his statement, resolutely stating that he'll change the world and that he will nevergive up.

As the blonde is about to give his name, the scene shifts to Naruto at Mount Myoboku, reading Jiraiya's story, "The Legend of the Gutsy Ninja." Naruto was apparently reading the aforementioned scene. As Naruto finds Jiraiya's picture at the end of the book, he remembers...

FLASHBACK

Naruto, training with Jiraiya, vents to his teacher about the suffering he'd endured with Sasuke in their final battle, specifically how Sasuke had told Naruto that he couldn't understand Sasuke's feelings. Naruto inquires about Jiraiya and Orochimaru's friendship and why Orochimaru would betray Konoha. Jiraiya sorrowfully tells Naruto that Orochimaru's motives were jumpstarted by his desire to see his dead parents once more or perhaps revenge on Konoha for their deaths, and thus he became obsessed with forbidden techniques. Jiraiya makes the parallel between his and Naruto's situation, noting that Jiraiya too was told that he didn't understand anything about his friend's feelings.

Jiraiya muses aloud that hatred is spreading and that he wants to put an end to it. He's not sure how, but he has faith that humans will understand each other eventually. Naruto remarks that it seems difficult. Jiraiya declares that should he not find the solution, the task would fall to Naruto, who joyously accepts. Jiraiya laughs, to Naruto's confusion, stating that he feels Naruto's smile is his salvation, and moreover that he's very glad he took Naruto as his apprentice. Naruto is visibly touched.

Just then, Jiraiya confidently asserts that he'll change the world with his books, to which Naruto skeptically notes that no one buys those books. Jiraiya maintains that the books will be tremendously successful, that Naruto will be begging for an autograph. Naruto remarks that he wouldn't want that, and as the flashback ends, he thinks to himself that, after all, he has something more important.

Meanwhile, the exhausted Sasuke brings the defeated Killerbee to Madara, with Juugo, carrying the inert Suigetsu and Karin, in tow. Madara congratulates him on a task well completed. As Sasuke walks away, Madara asks where he's going. Sasuke answers that first they will heal their wounds, after which they will go to Konoha. Madara remembers...

FLASHBACK

In a private meeting between Sasuke and Madara, Madara asks of Sasuke's intentions, wondering whether Sasuke will follow with Itachi's purpose of protecting Konoha. Sasuke states that Itachi's death was more significant than Konoha, that as Itachi considered Sasuke the most precious, so does Sasuke for Itachi. He says that despite what he said in front of his team, his goal is to completely crush Konoha, not just the elders, denouncing the village as vile. Sasuke tells Madara that though he may be seen as a child ruled by his emotions, Sasuke will continue regardless, that if he kills all those precious to those who get in his way, maybe they'll understand... his hatred.

END FLASHBACK

Madara, watching Sasuke's back, thinks that love has the risk of begetting hatred.

Meanwhile, in the Hidden Cloud village, Cloud shinobi alert their leader, the Raikage, that his brother, Killerbee, has been captured by Akatsuki, one of which was of Konoha's Uchiha clan. The Raikage, enraged, declares that he will not let Akatsuki go unpunished.

Naruto Shippuden Episode 75 Summary
posted by Punxx on 14 Sep 2008 12:21

***SPOILER WARNING***

Ino, Chouji and their teammates are scouting the border for signs of Akatsuki's presence and find themselves comically attacked by two old men who mistakingly take them for villains. Reports from various squads arrive, but no sighting of Akatsuki has yet been confirmed. Tsunade is extremely irritated.

In the meantime, Asuma, Shikamaru and their teammates arrive at the Fire Temple, where they see the graves of all the Temple's slain monks. Juushoku, a monk that was away at the time of the disaster, meets them and informs them that Chiriku's body is missing. Asuma and Shikamaru deduct that he's been taken to exchange for bounty. They send messages to the other advance squads and head for the nearest exchange point by themselves. Before leaving, Juushoku offers a prayer for their safety and Asuma reminisces on his youth with Chiriku. When concern is expressed, Asuma laughs it off, saying that the bounty on his head is by five million ryo greater than the one on Chiriku's.

Back in the village, Naruto has finally managed to split the waterfall in half and complete the first part of his training. Sakura and Sai go to check up on him, but since he's missing, Sakura offers one of her "special soldier pills" to Sai instead, who becomes sick from their horrible taste. Naruto seems to have similar problems in the Ichiraku Ramen shop, which Ayame seems to have changed to Tsukemen shop, a food similar to, but for Naruto fundamentally different than, raken. In the end, Naruto is coerced to finally eat tsukemen, although he uses a trick to make it similar to ramen. Finally, they are done with their food, and Kakashi smooth-talks his way into Yamato paying the bill.

The Akatsuki members Kakuzu and Hidan continue their way, constantly arguing over the extra delay. Hidan offers to carry the body with the intention of dumping it off, but Kakuzu sees through it and attacks him with his fist, which Hidan blocks with his scythe. Kakuzu once again promises that, once he has time, he will kill Hidan, a threat which Hidan shrugs off again.

The episode ends with Kakashi taking Naruto and Yamato outside, telling Naruto he has something "extremely cool" to show him. Naruto watches astonished as Kakashi forms a Rasengan on his hand.

Naruto Shipuuden 74 Summary
posted by Punxx on 07 Sep 2008 10:35

***SPOILER WARNING***

Picking up where the last episode left off Naruto continues his training with Kage Bunshins on the waterfall, before taking a break to let an exhausted, yet determined, Yamato rest. The scene then cuts to the opening, the highlight of today's episode, with new scenes of Hidan and Kakuzu's fight against Shikamaru and Asuma.

With the opening done we are taken to Hidan and Kakuzu who is still carrying a dead Chiriku on his back. Kakuzu orders Hidan to share the load, who promptly refuses. Kakuzu then promises to kill Hidan, who scoffs off his threat. Heading back to the village we see Asuma taking a stroll and Kurenai watering her plants before cutting to Sakura watching Naruto continue his training. She then thinks that maybe Naruto will not need the Soldier Pills anymore, before being surprised by Sai. He and Sakura discuss Naruto's training and his apparent niceness before leaving Naruto Sakura Soldier Pills. Kakashi remarks on their progress as a Team before giving Naruto the Soldier Pills, with disastrous results. Naruto then returns to his training with Sakura dropping off more pills the following day. On her way back, Sakura has a conversation with Iruka, who is very proud of his students, especially Naruto, leaving her some words of wisdom.

Outside of the Konoha Gate the surviving Monk makes his way. He explains the situation to Tsunade and Shizune who believe Akatsuki is targeting ares where the Jinchuuriki may be hidden. Tsunade assembles twenty of the platoons with the orders to capture or kill the Akatsuki Team. Asuma asks what happened to Chiriku becoming visibly upset with the news. The teams take off with determination, while Team Asuma decides to check out the Fire Temple, after making a stop outside of Kurenai's apartment. On the way Shikamaru asks who Chiriku was with Asuka explaining they fought together as part of the 12 Ninja Guardians.

Cutting back to Konoha a melancholy Sakura watches over their Team Seven photo reminiscing about the Tree Test and how much things have changed with tears falling. Sakura starts to feel insignificant before remembering its her feelings for Naruto that are important. The episode ends with a resting Naruto seeing the same shooting star Sakura saw and after saying Sasuke, Naruto starts his training again, renewed with determination.

Weekly Naruto Debate - Is Naruto Really About Ninjas?
posted by Punxx on 07 Sep 2008 09:17

Naruto? About ninjas!? I think not!

Is Naruto a series about ninjas? Is Naruto himself actually a ninja? Why does Mr. Kishimoto refer to his characters as ninja? Would a ninja really battle in an orange uniform? Well, the term ninja is in name only. Most characters in Naruto don't have the qualities that satisfy the definition of a literal ninja. When the term ninja comes up, what do you think? I think a stealthy assassin. In Naruto, ninja are portrayed as characters who act more like soldiers than anything. Few characters in Naruto have fighting styles that resemble a ninja. Few characters in Naruto also have the mindeset of a ninja. Busting onto a battlefield and announcing a challenge to your opponent isn't what a ninja does. A ninja ambushes and assassinates his opponent. A ninja observes and gathers intelligence before he acts. Naruto doesn't do any of this. His comrades don't. Even the more experienced ninja in the series don't with the exception of the likes of Zabuza and Kakashi. So no, Naruto isn't a series about ninja. Its about super-powered children.
